“Unlicensed Product” means Microsoft Office has not successfully activated. Before reinstalling, check the installed Office product, the account associated with it, any applicable subscription status, and whether conflicting Office installations are present. The warning alone does not identify which of these caused the problem.
This checklist is for legitimate activation troubleshooting. Do not use activation bypasses, unofficial scripts, or instructions that require disabling security software.
1. Record the exact warning and installed product
Open Word or Excel. On Windows, select File > Account and record the product name under Product Information. Use About Word or About Excel to record the version, build, and bit type. On Mac, select Word > About Word to view version and license details.
Write down the exact activation message. Compare the installed product with the product and platform in your order instructions. Reinstalling the same mismatched product is not a reliable solution.
2. Use the account and activation method associated with your purchase
If your Office product activates through a Microsoft account, sign in using the account associated with that purchase or redemption. A personal account and a work or school account are not automatically interchangeable.
For account-linked purchases, check the product or subscription in that account's Services & subscriptions area. If your order uses a different licensing or activation method, follow the instructions supplied for that exact product instead of assuming every license appears in a personal Microsoft account.
For product-specific next steps, see our Office 2024 activation guide. Never give another person your Microsoft account password.
3. Check subscription status only if your product is a subscription
If you use Microsoft 365, check whether the associated subscription is active. An expired subscription can prevent activation. If a company or school manages the subscription, ask its administrator to check access.
Do not assume a subscription renewal is required for a one-time-purchase Office product. First identify what you actually own. Our Office 2024 vs Microsoft 365 comparison explains the distinction between these product types.
4. Check for conflicting installations on Windows
Microsoft identifies multiple installed Office copies as a possible cause of activation conflicts.
- Save your work and close Office applications.
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Search for Office and review the installed product names.
- Identify which installation you intend to keep before removing anything.
Do not remove unfamiliar entries at random. Confirm your reinstall source, activation information, backups, and any separately installed Project or Visio requirements first. If an unused Office version is removed, restart the computer and test the intended Office application again.
5. Use the troubleshooting route for your actual product
If account, product, subscription, and installation checks do not resolve the warning, follow Microsoft's activation troubleshooting for your version. Microsoft also recommends an Office repair in relevant Windows troubleshooting scenarios after checking conflicting installations.
Do not treat a Windows repair procedure as a Mac procedure. On a Mac, Microsoft provides separate guidance for installation and activation problems, including cases where the wrong license is attached. Removing Mac license files is not a routine first step: it removes licenses and requires the correct account details to reactivate.
If reinstalling becomes necessary, use your product's authorized source and our Office 2024 installation guide. A reinstall cannot replace a missing entitlement or resolve every licensing issue.

Frequently asked questions
Does “Unlicensed Product” mean my key is invalid?
Not necessarily. Microsoft lists incorrect sign-in accounts, multiple Office installations, and expired subscriptions among possible causes. Diagnose the exact product and message before deciding what has failed.
Should I buy another key immediately?
First check your existing purchase, installed product, account, and activation instructions. Contact support with the exact error before making another purchase.
Will reinstalling Office always fix activation?
No. Reinstalling does not correct every account, subscription, product mismatch, or licensing problem. Start with the checks above.
Does a one-time Office purchase need a Microsoft 365 renewal?
Do not apply subscription troubleshooting to a product without first identifying it. Check your product name and purchase details to establish whether you have Microsoft 365 or a one-time-purchase edition.
Can I use a third-party activation script?
Do not use activation bypasses or scripts from untrusted sources. Follow the activation process for your product and use official troubleshooting or support.
