Windows Server Licensing – Find Your License (2022 & 2025)

Not sure which Windows Server license or CAL you need? This hub covers every Windows Server 2022 and 2025 edition we sell — Standard, Datacenter, and every CAL type — in one place, so you can find the exact license for your setup instead of guessing between near-identical product names.

Standard vs. Datacenter — Which Edition?

Standard Datacenter
Virtual machines Up to 2 per licensed host Unlimited
Best for Small to mid-sized businesses, light virtualization Heavily virtualized environments, private cloud, hosting
Storage Replica / SDN Limited Full support
Price Lower Higher

If you're running one or two VMs on a single host, Standard covers you. If you need many VMs, software-defined networking, or you're building a private cloud, go Datacenter.

Do You Need CALs Too?

A Windows Server license covers the server itself, but every user or device that connects to it also needs a Client Access License (CAL) — sold separately.

  • User CAL — tied to a person; they can connect from any device. Best for remote or hybrid teams.
  • Device CAL — tied to a device; any user can connect from it. Best for shared workstations or shift-based environments.
  • RDS CAL — an additional CAL required specifically for Remote Desktop Services, on top of your standard CAL, if you want users or devices connecting remotely via RDS.

Quick Picks by Scenario

  • Small office, 1–2 VMs, no remote access needed → Windows Server Standard + Device or User CALs matched to headcount
  • Small team needing remote desktop access → Windows Server Standard + RDS CAL bundle
  • Virtualization-heavy or hosting environment → Windows Server Datacenter (unlimited VMs)
  • Growing team, scaling CAL count → Buy CAL packs (5/10/20/50) and add more as you grow

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix Server 2022 and Server 2025 CALs?
No — CALs must match your server version. Server 2025 CALs work with Server 2025 hosts; Server 2022 CALs work with Server 2022 hosts.

Do I need both a standard CAL and an RDS CAL?
Yes, if you want Remote Desktop Services access. The standard CAL covers general server access; the RDS CAL is required in addition for remote desktop connections.

Are these genuine, perpetual licenses?
Yes — all licenses on this page are genuine Microsoft licenses with one-time payment and no subscription, delivered digitally within minutes of purchase.

I'm still not sure which one I need — can I ask before buying?
Yes, contact us and we'll help you match your setup (user count, VM count, remote access needs) to the right license and CAL combination.
